Revolution of the Daleks was the 2021 New Year Special of Doctor Who. It featured the return of Jack Harkness, and marked the Thirteenth Doctor's reunion with her companions following the events of TV The Timeless Children. The episode also saw the departure of Bradley Walsh as Graham O'Brien and Tosin Cole as Ryan Sinclair. Continuing the Reconnaissance Dalek storyline that began in TV Resolution, a new line of Daleks were introduced, cloned from a remnant of the original recon scout. It also saw the return of bronze Daleks, last seen on television in 2017's Twice Upon a Time, leading to a battle between both factions. Synopsis[] As the Thirteenth Doctor marks her days in prison, back on Earth the Daleks are presented on national television. They are the new Defence Drones, designed to protect the British public. Left behind on Earth, Yaz, Graham and Ryan need their friend more than ever. Now with Daleks on the assembly line, and a familiar face behind their production... What would the Doctor do? Plot[] 367 minutes after the Doctor melted the casing of the Reconnaissance Dalek, a lorry driver takes its empty casing from GCHQ to Depository 23, stopping off at a kiosk for a cup of tea. Walking back to his vehicle, he starts to breathe heavily, drops his cup, and collapses. The woman who served him drags him inside the lorry with the casing and drives it away. Jo Patterson, the Technology Secretary of the United Kingdom, drives to a breakfast meeting with Leo Rugazzi and Jack Robertson to see Leo's new Defence Drones. They watch a fake riot organised by Robertson, where a Defence Drone ââŹâ in appearance like a Dalek ââŹâ effectively disperses the rioters with its water cannon, mock tear gas and loud noise. Afterwards, Leo shows the pair how the drones are solar powered and controlled by artificial intelligence. Robertson and Patterson talk in private, and Patterson warns him not to tell anyone that she tipped him off about advanced technology being transported from GCHQ. Robertson tells her that the drones will take around a year to develop, in time to help her win the upcoming general election. In a maximum security facility located inside an asteroid 79 billion light years away, the Thirteenth Doctor wakes up. She scratches a mark on the wall of her cell, which is covered in tally marks presumably counting the days of her imprisonment. A monitor flashes on her wall instructing her to exercise, and she is escorted to an exercise facility, saying hello to the cameras and her fellow inmates as she passes. Back in her cell, a monitor flashes again, instructing her to sleep. She begins to tell herself a bedtime story but is interrupted by knocking from the other side of a wall. She knocks four times in response, but receives no answer. Back on Earth on or around New Year's Day 2021, Ryan Sinclair and Graham O'Brien walk towards the TARDIS disguised as a house. They go to knock on the door, but it opens for them. Inside the TARDIS control room they find Yasmin Khan, surrounded by coloured paper and post-it notes covered in writing stuck to almost every surface. She has been sleeping inside the TARDIS and is desperately trying to find the Doctor. Ryan and Graham tell her that she needs to move on because the Doctor has been away for ten months, but she refuses to listen. Graham shows her leaked footage from the fake riot Robertson organised; recognising "spider guy" and identifying the prototype Defence Drone as a Dalek, they decide to investigate whether Robertson is in league with it. Patterson ââŹâ now running for Prime Minister of the United Kingdom ââŹâ summons Robertson to a rainy forest. She tells him that she wants an immediate national rollout of the drones "at no cost to the British taxpayer", threatening him with exposing the lack of British taxes paid by his companies, and he reluctantly acquiesces. That night, as Robertson gets out of his car, telling Leo that he has arrived, he is confronted by Yaz, Ryan, and Graham. After initially believing them to be muggers, he recognises them, but appears not to understand when they ask him about the Dalek. Suddenly, they are surrounded by people with guns with Robertson saying he increased his security after the last time they met, who force the trio to leave. They lament how hard it is to "see what's going on" without the Doctor, psychic paper, or a working TARDIS. At the prison, the Doctor's day begins as normal. However, in the exercise facility this time she finds Jack Harkness, also imprisoned there, in the fenced square next to her. Jack shows her a temporal-freezing gateway disinhibitor bubble, which they use to get to his smuggled-in vortex manipulator; on the way, he says he committed "a few... maybe a lot of crimes" to get himself into the prison after hearing a rumour that she was there, and that it took him nineteen years to get to the cell next to her. They hug, then activate the vortex manipulator to teleport out of the prison just in time. Back on Earth, Patterson has been elected party leader, and therefore Prime Minister. Leo talks to Robertson about the drones; he is worried about the speed of the production, but Robertson reassures him, telling him to "live in the worry". Leo tells Robertson that he found organic remnants in the original casing, and shows him the Dalek mutant he grew by cloning them. He calls it beautiful and intelligent, saying he successfully hooked it into their computer systems, but a revolted Robertson orders him to incinerate the creature and tell no one about its existence. Leo takes the box containing the Dalek mutant to the incinerator, but when he opens it, the creature inside grabs him. Under the Dalek's control, he makes a phone call to his family, saying he has to go on an urgent business trip. The Doctor and Jack teleport into her TARDIS, where all the lights have been dimmed. Jack compliments the new interior, and asks if she received his message; she admits that she did give the Cyberium to Ashad, but says she eventually fixed it, "sort of". She tells him that she was imprisoned for evading the Judoon twice, and also "7000 other offences", but ultimately describes it as having been "in prison for being me", while expressing her uncertainty about her own identity. The Doctor instructs the TARDIS to find the others, on Earth. Yaz, Ryan and Graham are talking about the Dalek they saw in the leaked footage. Yaz has discovered that remnants of the Dalek from GCHQ were stolen, but Graham insists that the Dalek from the riot footage cannot be the same one, as the creature inside it was thrown in a supernova. Ryan suggests that there may be more Daleks on Earth, controlling Robertson, but Yaz shushes the others when she hears the sound of the TARDIS. The TARDIS materialises in the living room, and the Doctor and Jack come out. The Doctor is surprised to learn that it has been ten months since the other three were sent back to Earth, since she claims to have set identical temporal coordinates. After she apologises, Jack asks "What's new on Planet Earth?", to which Ryan, Graham and Yaz reply "Dalek". Meanwhile, in Osaka, Japan, the Dalek controlling Leo takes him to a building, where he is horrified to discover a Dalek clone farm which the Dalek refers to as "my project". In the TARDIS, the Doctor scans Earth for Dalek DNA traces, while Jack explains his immortality and past dealings with the Daleks to Team TARDIS. The scan picks up a DNA trace in Osaka, where Robertson has recently opened a facility, but it appears corrupted and is not an exact match. Jack and Yaz volunteer to investigate whilst Graham, Ryan, and the Doctor go talk to Robertson. The Doctor materialises the TARDIS in Robertson's office, and she asks him about the Daleks, having blocked his phone lines so he cannot call security. Exasperated, Robertson decides to show them the "production line", where he is 3D printing thousands of "security drones" modelled on the Recon Dalek from GCHQ. Robertson shows them that there is nothing inside the drones, which are run by artificial intelligence. Graham asks about his facility in Osaka, and Robertson replies that he does not have one. In Osaka, Yaz tells Jack how it was hard for her in the ten months that the Doctor had been away, expressing a wish that she had never met her if it had to stop so abruptly. Jack tells her about his adventures with the Doctor, including his own abandonment, but says she should "enjoy the journey" while she can because "the joy is worth the pain". They explore the building listed as an "agricultural park" with torches and realise that it is a Dalek clone farm. Jo Patterson makes an address outside 10 Downing Street, promising that as Prime Minister she will make Britain "more secure", so that they can enter an "age of security", and unveils the new Defence Drones. She announces they will be patrolling on streets, and at borders, institutions and national landmarks. Meanwhile, the Doctor, Graham and Ryan are taking Robertson in the TARDIS to visit "his" facility in Japan. In the Dalek clone farm, Yaz is investigating, while Jack sets explosive charges on the walkways and railings in order to blow it up, but the creatures surrounding them start to climb out of their tanks. The Dalek mutants attack them, but Yaz helps rip one of them off Jack's face, despite being attacked herself, and Jack vaporises both creatures with his sonic blaster. The TARDIS flies through the time vortex, four minutes away from Osaka. Ryan is sitting on the stairs, putting on his beanie. The Doctor approaches him, recalling that she noticed the yellow one he was wearing when they met, and apologises for being away for ten months. Ryan says that although he did miss her, he had time to reconnect with his family and friends. He asks about Gallifrey and the Master, and stops the Doctor trying to change the subject. The Doctor tells him that her entire life story has been changed, and how she does not know who she is any more, or even how much of her life is unknown to her. Ryan tells her that, although they are both different to how they were when they met, it is a good thing that they are, and after they have finished with the Daleks, she needs to find out about herself. The Doctor promises that she will. The TARDIS materialises in the Dalek clone farm, where Jack and Yaz are reunited with the others. When the Doctor asks who built the farm, the Dalek-possessed Leo reveals himself and explains how it used the company's network and systems to remotely direct the construction, liquidising the workers once they had finished and feeding them to the new Daleks. Meanwhile, the Doctor notices with Yaz's help that the light in the facility has been gradually changing, but is unable to identify why it is bothering her. The Dalek explains that it does not want to leave Earth, but rather intends to convert the planet into a base from which to conquer Earth's sector of the universe. The Doctor realises that the purpling light is actually becoming ultraviolet, a wavelength which the Recon Dalek previously used to reassemble itself, but is unable to turn it off before the order to activate is given and all the mutants teleport into the shells. As the Dalek secretly altered the non-weaponised designs of the Defence Drones, each one is now a fully armed Dalek, and they begin to kill the humans at their posts using death rays of red light ââŹâ including the four outside 10 Downing Street, which exterminate Patterson before declaring Earth "property of the Daleks". In Osaka, the Doctor questions Robertson on how many drones he built, to which he responds "thousands". Leo is killed by the Dalek controlling him, which then teleports away, and the Doctor says she has finally figured out who she is, declaring "I'm the Doctor. I'm the one who stops the Daleks" and going back into the TARDIS to stop the invasion. Against Jack's advice, and describing it as the "nuclear option", she sends the Recon Scout's signal through the Time Vortex to be picked up by a Dalek ship. The Doctor explains that Death Squad Daleks who she describes as "the SAS of Daleks" will ignore humans in favour of exterminating the mutated Daleks to enforce the purity of the Dalek race, but says it is important that they not know she is there. The signal is received by the ship and the Daleks prepare to attack Earth. Pedestrians scream and run through the streets as the flying Defence Drones exterminate them from above. However, when the Death Squad Daleks arrive they detect the mutated Dalek DNA and engage the Defence Drones using "maximum extermination". After a group of Death Squad Daleks destroy the "primary rogue impurities" on Clifton Suspension Bridge, rejecting their argument that they mutated to survive, Robertson decides to join forces with the Daleks and approaches them with promises of information, claiming to be the leader of Earth. In the TARDIS, the Doctor explains phase two of the plan once all the Defence Drones are destroyed, Jack will blow up the Death Squad ship. Graham and Ryan elect to come with him, and Jack teleports them on board. While planting the bombs, Jack overhears Robertson telling the Dalek leader about the Doctor's involvement. As he does, the last Defence Drone possibly the original Recon Scout clone teleports on board, and is exterminated despite its attempts to explain itself. Rejoining Graham and Ryan, Jack calls the Doctor to report the Defence Drones' destruction and Robertson's betrayal. She enacts a backup plan with Yaz to deal with the final "SAS Daleks" on Earth. With a timer set to blow up the ship, Robertson meets Jack, Graham, and Ryan and they deliberate over whether to save his life as the Daleks round on them. In the air above Earth, the Daleks surround the TARDIS, with the Doctor thanking them for running to her. When she baits them, they all fly inside the TARDIS. Meanwhile, Jack teleports his group off the Dalek ship seconds before they are exterminated, and the ship is destroyed. On Earth, the remaining Daleks find themselves inside the house TARDIS, with a hologram of her explaining she used its chameleon circuit to disguise it as hers, and has programmed it to fold in on itself then be sent into the Void. She taunts them as the TARDIS self-destructs, taking the Daleks with it. Everyone reconvenes on the Doctor's TARDIS, and Robertson claims that he was "deliberately acting as a decoy". In Graham's house, Graham and Ryan watch Robertson speaking to Emily Maitlis on Newsnight, where she explains he is being showered with accolades and may run again for President. Turning the TV off in disgust, they head outside to meet the Doctor, who is talking to Jack on the TARDIS comms. As the Doctor hangs up sending her love to Gwen Cooper, Team TARDIS prepares to leave for the Meringue Galaxy restaurant, but Ryan chooses to stay behind. He says his friends and his planet need him, and that he now knows what he wants to do with his life. They hug. When the Doctor asks, Yaz immediately confirms she wants to stay, but although Graham was willing to continue, he says he does not want to miss out on his grandson growing up, and is ready to go home. The four have one final group hug as the Doctor bids farewell to her "fam". Before they leave, she gifts them a piece of psychic paper each, and Graham parts ways by admitting he was wrong, "we do get aliens in Sheffield". Although the Doctor suggests she could go back and change the timeline, Yaz says it's okay for her to be sad. Graham and Ryan are seen back on the hill outside Sheffield, with Ryan practising cycling just as he did on the day they met the Doctor. He makes some progress, and the two discuss looking up strange occurrences around the world ââŹâ a troll invasion in Finland and gravel creatures in a quarry in Korea. Knowing they can do whatever they want with their psychic paper, they begin to make plans, but only after they finish the cycling Ryan declares he will not be scared off by a bike after everything they've fought, and as they prepare to try again, they both see a vision of Grace smiling at them. Graham promises "a few more tries and we'll go and save the world," and they keep practising. References[] Species[] The Doctor's fellow prisoners include a Weeping Angel whom the Doctor nicknamed "Angela", an Ood and a Sycorax, sharing an exercise yard, whom the Doctor nicknamed "Bonnie" and "Clyde" respectively after the famous outlaws, and a Pting whom the Doctor nicknamed "Tiny", as well as a Silent, a Skithra, a Gathering Coil, a Cyberman, and a Thijarian. Popular culture[] The Doctor recites the opening line of a "classic" story to herself, mentioning "Mr. and Mrs. Dursley of 4 Privet Drive". Robertson gives an interview to Emily Maitlis on Newsnight. Individuals[] Jack mentions catching up with Gwen Cooper. Jack recalls Rose Tyler and her fate. Ryan has reconnected with his dad. Ryan and Graham both have a vision of Grace O'Brien. Technology[] Jack has his vortex manipulator. Jack uses a temporal-freezing gateway disinhibitor bubble to break the Doctor and himself out of prison. The Doctor gives Ryan and Graham each some psychic paper as a parting gift. Gwen Cooper is said to have used a moped and her son's boxing gloves to destroy a Dalek. Robertson creates his Dalek casings with 3D printers. Locations[] The prison where the Doctor is being held is seventy-nine billion light-years away from Earth. Ryan reads a story online about a village in Finland that is supposedly dealing with a troll invasion. Graham mentions having heard a story about a quarry in Korea that has been shut down due to reports of "gravel creatures coming to life". Miscellaneous[] The Doctor is given a food cube to eat every morning in prison. Story notes[] This was the first episode of Doctor Who to be simultaneously broadcast in 4K UHD with HDR colour grading, and the second episode ever made available in this format. Since the BBC does not broadcast in 4K UHD on its television channels, it was instead made available on BBC iPlayer, with a red button prompt appearing during its BBC One broadcast. Twice Upon a Time remains the first episode to be released in 4K UHD, as it was remastered in the format after broadcast for its re-release on UHD Blu-ray. It is also the first time since Twice Upon a Time that the end credits returned to groups rather than scrolling. This was a one-off as the next episode, The Halloween Apocalypse, returned to the scrolling credits seen throughout the Chibnall era. This was the first televised story of the parent Doctor Who series to be originally released to a streaming service, making its debut on BBC iPlayer around 10 minutes before its BBC One broadcast, rather than shortly afterwards or live and concurrently, as is the norm. However, Series 1 of Class had previously debuted on the same service. The opening title card "A LONG TIME AGO... FAR, FAR AWAY..." is a reference to the famous Star Wars opening title, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...". The "Defence Drones" have voices similar to those used by the Imperial Daleks in TV Remembrance of the Daleks, the last televised instance of a Dalek Civil War. Chris Noth Jack Robertson is credited as "Robertson" on BBC iPlayer, and erroneously as "Alan Robertson" in Radio Times. Nathan Armarkwei-Laryea Armen, Helen Anderson Rachel, Nicholas Briggs Voice of the Daleks, Barnaby Edwards Dalek Operator 1, Nicholas Pegg Dalek Operator 2 and Sharon D Clarke Grace are credited on-screen but not in Radio Times or on BBC iPlayer. Unlike previous New Year Specials, The End of Time Part Two and Resolution, the end credits specified the episode was broadcast in 2021 hence MMXXI. This story saw the first time since Journey's End that John Barrowman was credited in the opening title sequence. In early versions of the story, the AI Defence Drone demonstration took place at a stately home and they were first rolled out in Russia, leading to the Daleks killing most of the world's leaders and taking over Earth. The Doctor referred to the Dalek Death Squad as 'Navy Seals Daleks', while Ryan and Graham would have decided to leave the TARDIS to help rebuild Earth. DWM 570 supplement Production paperwork referred to the Defence Drones and Death Squad Daleks as 'Bobs' and 'Nigels', respectively. DWM 570 supplement This was John Barrowman's last appearance as Jack Harkness before allegations of sexual misconduct resulted in him being blacklisted by the BBC. Graham or Ryan would die at the end of the episode. This theory was incorrect as they would both leave the TARDIS alive at the end of the episode and given an open ending. David Tennant would make a cameo as the Tenth Doctor. This was proven false. The Special Weapons Dalek was to return. This was proven false. This story would be a two-parter. This was proven false. This story would continue the war between the Renegade Daleks and the Imperial Daleks. Although not entirely true, it does contain a similar plot element. The Doctor would not be broken out of the prison until the halfway point of the episode. This was proven false. Production errors[] If you'd like to talk about narrative problems with this story ââŹâ like plot holes and things that seem to contradict other stories ââŹâ please go to this episode's discontinuity discussion. When the Doctor runs over to Jack after noticing him in the neighbouring prison cell, Jodie Whittaker clearly grasps the electrified bars with no ill effect. When the Dalek gives the order for Jo Patterson to be exterminated, it is slightly to the left of the picture but in the next shot, it has now moved to the right. For this reason, stories such as The Space Museum are not counted due to the Daleks' appearance being defined by their importance to following stories, while stories such as The Wheel in Space and The Waters of Mars are absent due to the Daleks' only contribution being references to past Dalek stories. Stories like Hell Bent, Once, Upon Time and The Vanquishers are also not included due to the Daleks' appearance being restricted to a single scene of no consequence to the plot of the Doctor era The Daleks ââŹÂ˘ The Dalek Invasion of Earth ââŹÂ˘ The Chase ââŹÂ˘ Mission to the Unknown ââŹÂ˘ The Daleks' Master PlanSecond Doctor era The Power of the Daleks ââŹÂ˘ The Evil of the DaleksThird Doctor era Day of the Daleks ââŹÂ˘ Frontier in Space / Planet of the Daleks ââŹÂ˘ Death to the DaleksFourth Doctor era Genesis of the Daleks ââŹÂ˘ Destiny of the DaleksFifth Doctor era The Five Doctors ââŹÂ˘ Resurrection of the DaleksSixth Doctor era Revelation of the DaleksSeventh Doctor era Remembrance of the DaleksThe "Wilderness Years" Doctor Who ââŹÂ˘ The Curse of Fatal DeathNinth Doctor era Dalek ââŹÂ˘ Bad Wolf / The Parting of the WaysTenth Doctor era Army of Ghosts / Doomsday ââŹÂ˘ Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks ââŹÂ˘ The Stolen Earth / Journey's EndEleventh Doctor era Victory of the Daleks ââŹÂ˘ The Pandorica Opens / The Big Bang ââŹÂ˘ The Wedding of River Song ââŹÂ˘ Asylum of the Daleks ââŹÂ˘ The Day of the Doctor ââŹÂ˘ The Time of the DoctorTwelfth Doctor era Into the Dalek ââŹÂ˘ The Magician's Apprentice / The Witch's Familiar ââŹÂ˘ The Pilot ââŹÂ˘ Twice Upon a TimeThirteenth Doctor era Resolution ââŹÂ˘ Revolution of the Daleks ââŹÂ˘ Eve of the DaleksBecause of the ubiquity of this race, no attempt will be made here to list every appearance in every medium. TheDoctor, Yaz and Dan land on New Yearâs Eve in a self-storage depot while the Doctor attempts to purge the remaining Flux energy from the TARDIS. Turns out doing that causes a time loop, which the Daleks pop into in order to extract revenge for the Doctor wiping out their war fleet with the Flux. Also there are Sarah (a brilliant Aisling Bea) and oddball Nick

This year, I hope share weekly posts of quotes. These quotes are from authors I'm reading and enjoying from the Clouds of Witnesses Reading Challenge. You will never know God as you should know Him unless you are helpless in His hands, unless you cannot escape Him. As long as you can run, you are not in Godâs hands. ~ Tozer A sick society must think about politics, as a sick man must think about his digestion To ignore the subject may be fatal cowardice for the one as for the other. But if either comes to regard it as the natural food of the mindâif either forgets that we think of such things only in order to be able to think of something elseâthen what was undertaken for the sake of health has become itself a new and deadly disease. ~ Lewis Comfort is the one thing you cannot get by looking for it. If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth-only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin with and, in the end, despair. ~ Lewis The vigor, and power, and comfort of our spiritual life depends on the mortification of the deeds of the flesh. ~ John Owen Chesterton, "We make our friends; we make our enemies; but God makes our next-door neighbor." You will all be crushed under the heel of the Viltrum Empire! â ~ Omni-Man. â This planet has... changed me. And there's no going back from that, son. Without you... I don't know what it would have taken... what I would have done... to make me realize that. â ~ Nolan to his son, Mark Grayson/Invincible. â WHY DID YOU MAKE ME DO THIS!? YOU'RE FIGHTING SO YOU CAN WATCH EVERYONE AROUND YOU DIE! THINK, MARK! You'll outlast every fragile, insignificant being on this planet! You'll live to see this world crumble to dust and BLOW AWAY! EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING you know WILL BE GONE! WHAT WILL YOU HAVE AFTER FIVE HUNDRED YEARS!? â ~ Omni-Man's villainous breakdown and his most famous speech to Mark, from the TV series. Omni-Man real name Nolan, also known by his adopted name, Nolan Grayson, is the deuteragonist of the Invincible comic book series and the main antagonist of the first season of its 2021 animated adaptation. Omni-Man is the father of Invincible and Omni-Boy and a member of Viltrumite race, a humanoid species of extraterrestrial origin who possess superhuman strength, super speed, virtual immortality, and flight. As is customary for male Viltrumites, Omni-Man sports a large mustache. He was tasked with conquering planets to spread the Viltrumite empire, and arrived on Earth to infiltrate their society to weaken a chance for them to defend themselves. Becoming a writer and superhero "Omni-Man", Nolan would have a son named Mark Grayson with a human woman named Debbie, who would become a superhero under the moniker "Invincible". Omni-Man would eventually reveal his plans and battled his son after killing all of the Guardians of the Globe, but would leave the planet due to his love for his son. Nolan would redeem himself and become the emperor of Viltrum after his true heritage was revealed. In the animated adaptation, he is voiced by Simmons, who also played Vernon Schillinger in Oz, J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, General Wade Eiling in Justice League Unlimited, Skip in Aliens in the Attic, Cave Johnson in the Portal video game series, Terence Fletcher in Whiplash, Kai in Kung Fu Panda 3, Captain Matt McKenna in 21 Bridges, Ivo Shandor in Ghostbusters Afterlife and Captain Putty in Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers. Biography Early Life Nolan was born on the planet Viltrum to Argall and an unnamed woman, and his heritage was hidden due to his father being killed by Thaedus. The Viltrumites would create a strong empire under Thragg, wanting to conquer planets and spread their influence across the galaxy. Reaching the appropriate age, Nolan decided to help the Viltrumites conquer planets, becoming a capable warrior that he would command his own unit. When Viltrum suffered from a virus, the empire decided to use their lifespans to infiltrate planets and societies to weaken their defense so that the targets could not counter-attack the Viltrumites. Infiltrating Earth Nolan took on the mission to infiltrate the planet Earth, and started his mission by befriending Cecil Stedman to learn about human culture. He took on the surname "Grayson" to appear more human, and Stedman set him up to be "Omni-Man", Earth's most powerful superhero. During his mission, Nolan met and fell in love with an Earth woman named Debbie, whom he later married and had their son, Mark. Nolan would continue to fight against supervillains as "Omni-Man", and became an ally of the Guardians of the Globe, a superhero team. In addition, Nolan would falsely tell Debbie, Cecil, and the costume maker Art Rosenbaum why he was on Earth. While raising Mark, Nolan told him that he would receive powers like him, but told him false stories of why he was on Earth as well. Invincible When Mark gained his powers and became a superhero under the moniker "Invincible", Nolan would help his son fight against the Flaxans but was abducted by the creatures. He was stuck in their dimension for eight months, with the Flaxans neutralizing his powers and keeping him prisoner. Nolan's powers returned, however, and he revolted before escaping the dimension and returning his wife and son. While working on his plans, he had Mark substitute for him to battle Allen the Alien and was kept occupied while his son later went to Upstate University. When his son returned home and overslept due to stopping many threats, Nolan put his plans into motion by going to the Guardians of the Globe's headquarters and killing all of them. Afterward, Nolan kept himself out of the spotlight to not become a suspect in Black Samson's investigation, and struggled with telling Mark his true origins. When battling the Immortal again, Nolan killed him again in front of his son, and revealed his true Viltrumite origins and what his empire tasked him to do. He asked Mark to join him in conquering Earth, but his son refused and the two battled across locations until he was beaten. Though Nolan had Mark at his mercy, Omni-Man realizes to love his son too much to kill him instead spared his son and fled the planet, crying while flying into space. Realizing that he loved his son, Nolan decided to conquer another planet to lessen his crime for deserting the Viltrumite Empire and not going through with their plans. Arriving to Thraxa, Nolan learned that the Thraxans had a short life span and the oldest individual would rule the planet. Nolan became their ruler since he had lived for thousands of years, and sent a Thraxan to collect his son from Earth. While living on Thraxa, Nolan mated with a fellow Thraxan Andressa, and the two had a child named Oliver. The two reunite and reconcile, but Nolan refuses to return to Earth due to his actions and that he must stay on Thraxa. He reveals to Mark that he had a son with a Thraxan, and that the child would be killed by the Viltrumites due to having a genetic flaw of having purple skin. Nolan and Mark would defend the planet from the Viltrumites, and the former is captured by Lucan and imprisoned alongside Allen the Alien. The two become friends and escape from confinement and the two decide to prepare themselves against the Viltrumites, as the empire is preparing to invade Earth. Embarking on adventures across the galaxy, they gather weapons and allies like Battle Beast and Space Racer which will give them an advantage over the Viltrumites, before returning to Earth to collect Mark and Oliver and reconcile with Debbie. They are briefly waylaid by the Viltrumite champion Conquest, an old enemy of Invincible who is killed in the ensuing battle, but not before Mark is critically injured. Nolan spends the subsequent months bonding with Oliver while Mark heals. In the final battle of the war, Omni-Man, alongside with Invincible, Allen, Oliver, Thaedus, Battle Beast and Space Racer managed to win destroying the Viltrum planet and scattering their enemies, although Thaedus is killed while Nolan, Mark and Oliver are badly wounded by the Viltrumite regent Thragg, who secretly relocates the surviving members of his race on Earth, planning to interbreed with humans to covertly rebuild the empire. Afterwards Thragg discovers that Nolan is a descendant of the long-dead Emperor of Viltrum Argall, and thus heir to the throne, provoking a fierce battle between them. Although Nolan is overpowered, but the Viltrumites recognize him and rally behind him, overpowering and capturing Thragg. Nolan is subsequently crowned as ruler of the Viltrum Empire and Thragg is exiled. Nolan Grayson managed to overlook the Viltrumites on Earth and saw how the Viltrumites changed for the better and see Earth as their new home. In the final confrontation between the Viltrumites and Thragg's army, Nolan was killed by Thragg but Mark managed to defeat him once for all. Before succumbing to his wounds, Nolan names Mark as his successor to be the Emperor of Viltrumites. In the future, his grandson Marky Mark and Anissa's son visits Nolan's grave and promises to live up to his father's legacy. Personality Due to the first thousands of years of his life, he had been indoctrinated with the Viltrumite ideology, a group of super-powered aliens whose only goals is to eradicate weaker species. Nolan was a loyal Viltrumite who believed in there cause and wished to be one of their top members who would spread around and conquer planets. While at first Nolan had conquered alongside his fellow clansmen, he later went on solo missions to colonize. He would start by destroying the planet's most prized protector. His upbringing and possible physiology has Nolan a brutal cataclysmic being. He views all life as pointless and pathetic, believing he is a superior race. This also paired with the fact that he lives way longer than anybody else, so getting attached to anybody would be pointless. Thanks to his unparalleled strength and night-invincibility, he can brutally kill anybody with absolutely zero effort and risk, regardless of their power, strategy and/or numbers. This is shown when he destroys an entire race of technologically advanced aliens within mere moments. Most of his kills are done by simply throwing heavy things at someone, flying into them or simply hitting them, causing them to explode. He displays little-to-no emotion during most fights, Though usually fighting with brute force, Nolan also displays intelligence and some battle tactics. This is shown when he throws Darkwing's dead body at Green Girl, so she will stop using her intangibility to catch her dead friend, giving him the opportunity to strike. He also occasionally uses weapons, seen when he grabs War Woman's battle hammer, or just using corpses. When he is being sent through a portal home by Martians scientists, before he steps in, he throws a meteor at them which hits after he leaves. He is also sufficient in torture methods, even without resorting to brutalization, seen when he drops a criminal from the sky and catching him moments before falling to his death. After coming to Earth, Nolan unconsciously became attached to humanity. With his family, Nolan displays many qualities of a middle-aged suburban man. He gets along with his family very well, regularly training Mark or taking Debbie on dates sometimes across the world. He also displays a brotherly bond with his best friend and tailor, Art, commonly sharing drinks and talking. Nolan has no qualms over using his powers for everyday tasks, like traveling and floating. He is charismatic but also occasionally displays somewhat poor social skills, such as asking about dinner after his coworkers are brutally murdered by him in secret. He is also rude to a hospital attendant, demanding his clothes from her due to it being condemning evidence against him. As a superhero, Omni-man displayed a typical super-man-like personality who always comes to save the day. He doesn't wear a disguise to hide his identity like many superheroes. Due to his unmatched strength, he could wipe out enemies with absolutely zero effort, though seemingly holds back his strength in front of others. This unmatched strength also makes him uncooperative with the other Guardians of the Globe, making him somewhat distant from them. Omni-man didn't really think of them as friends and only thought of them as coworkers. Omni-Man's sadistic side After his son, Mark awakens his powers, Nolan's Viltrum persona is reawakened, starting with him assassinating the Guardians. He doesn't show his true nature, however, unless he is provoked about it. This is shown when he gets angry at the detective, Darkblood for trying to investigate the Guardian's true death. He is also very rude to a nurse since she has his bloody shirt. Nolan can be somewhat careless. He is not too careful about hiding his murders of the Guardians, seeing how he leaves condemning evidence in his closet, despite obviously having the ability to hide it any. Omni-Man gives a eulogy for the people he killed Nolan was shown to be very highly manipulative, seen how he was able to fool Earth into thinking he was a saviour for over twenty years though partially because he felt attached to humans deep in his heart. He gives a eulogy for the Guardians of the Globe who he secretly killed. He is even kind to the people who attended their funeral. He is able to protect his identity from his loved one though, with his charismatic and manipulative nature, by tricking his family into thinking the people trying to expose his true identity are the bad guys. Once his true identity is revealed, almost any semblance of humanity he had is temporarily gone, showing his horrifically monstrous side. He becomes completely cataclysmic, destroying all in his path, hoping to find Mark immediately. He even calmly threatens Mark's best friend his location away. Once meeting with his son who doesn't know his true nature yet, he makes him believe they should be fighting the monster trying to kill him and they should kill him together. He can no longer hide his identity, after mutilating the superhero, Immortal. Omni-Man angry at his son With his identity exposed to his son, he calmly explains his origins to him and tries to indoctrinate his philosophy onto him. When Mark rejects this, he attacks him and murders massive amounts of innocent civilians to prove a point. He seems unsure why Mark wouldn't want to be a loyal Viltrum like him, not even considering they are complete strangers to him and Nolan had kept this hidden from him his whole life. He is willing to horrifically mutilate Mark and make another child, until he remembers a happy memory with him and realizes Mark still loves him. Nolan finally is coped with guilt and leaves Earth in tears. Overall, this fight was more about Nolan trying to convince himself he was a loyal Viltrumite, rather than convincing Mark. In short, Nolan was a conflicted man who developed a love for Earth against his will but wanted to convince himself he's still a loyal Viltrum soldier. After destroying many lives at his new home, Nolan had "woken up" and started to feel guilt, becoming a hero in the process. Quotes Comics TV Series Trivia Concept art for "Supra-Ma". Omni-Man's design, role to the Earth, initial personality and partial backstory are evidently influenced by Superman, though clear differences begin with Omni-Man's true original motive and much of his backstory. Omni-Man was originally going to be named "Supra Man", but Image Comics made the writers changed the name due to it being too close tp Superman. Omni-Man bears a striking resemblance to J. Jonah Jameson from the Spider-Man comics. Interestingly, Simmons, who plays Omni-Man, played Jameson in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Omni-Man has fought and defeated Homelander in an episode of DEATH BATTLE!. Connect to one of your VPNâs servers in the required country. Youâd use a British server to unblock BBC iPlayer, for instance, or an Australian server to watch ABC iview. Finally, try watching something. Your video should load right away but if it doesnât, clear your cookies and try again. If problems persist, switch servers or contact your VPNâs support team for more in-depth advice. The 2020 Doctor Who Xmas special will be broadcast live, which is why we recommend making sure your VPN works properly ahead of time. By spending a few minutes testing things in advance, you can avoid missing the start of the episode due to last-minute technical trouble. Many major VPNs offer around-the-clock support via live chat in case you need help troubleshooting. How to watch the Doctor Who Xmas special for free on UK TV The BBC produces Doctor Who, so it should come as no surprise that the holiday special will be available exclusively on BBC iPlayer. The new episode will be shown live and made available on demand shortly after airing. As such, thereâs no need to worry about missing it if you have other plans on New Yearâs Day. This service is completely free to use, although you will have to create an account before you can watch anything. Doing so only takes a minute though, and while youâll be asked for a UK postcode, any will work. Currently, all 12 newer seasons are available on-demand in case youâd like to catch up ahead of the special episode. Perhaps the holiday special has you nostalgic for the old days of the series? If so, youâll find 26 seasons of classic Doctor Who on Britbox. Normally, youâd have to pay ÂŁ per month to watch, but thereâs a 30-day free trial included. As such, you can sign up, watch your fill, and cancel to avoid being charged. BBC iPlayer and Britbox are both geo-restricted. However, with a VPN, youâll be able to access them as normal from abroad. NordVPN comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee that allows you to try it completely risk-free. If youâre not impressed, just cancel for a full refund. Where else can I stream the Doctor Who Christmas Special online? Whovians around the world wonât have to wait too long, since this yearâs festive episode will be released almost simultaneously in multiple countries. Hereâs how to watch wherever you are US The 2020 Doctor Who Christmas special will be shown on BBC America at 8 PM EST 5 PM PST on January 1. You can sign in with your cable provider details to watch at no added cost, but donât worry thereâs also a way to stream the Doctor Who special for free without cable. BBC America lets you sign in with a fuboTV, YouTube TV, or Philo account. These services are an expensive way to watch one episode, though, considering their prices range from $20â65 USD per month. However, each comes with a one-week trial period two weeks for YouTube TV. This allows you to sign up, watch Doctor Who, and cancel before your payment method is charged. Want to watch older episodes ahead of the special? Youâll find all 26 seasons of classic pre-2005 Doctor Who on Britbox. This costs $ per month and includes a seven-day free trial. The 12 newer seasons are exclusive to HBO Max, which costs $ per month and no longer offers any kind of trial period. All of these streaming platforms are geo-restricted and only available in the US. However, by connecting to an American VPN server, you should be able to access them from anywhere. Canada Doctor Who fans in Canada can stream the Christmas special at the same time as itâs shown in the US 8 PM EST on January 1. Thereâs a catch, though itâll only be shown on CTV Sci Fi. This is unfortunate, since at the moment, CTV does not support any over-the-top streaming services and cannot be watched online without a cable TV subscription. On the other hand, Crave has all of the previous Christmas specials and the 12 most recent seasons, so itâs not a huge stretch to imagine that Revolution of the Daleks will be added at some point too. Prices start at $ CAD per month, but thereâs also a seven-day trial that will allow you to watch for free whenever the new episode is added. CTV and Crave are usually only accessible in Canada. That said, after connecting to a Canadian VPN server, youâll be able to use these services as normal, wherever you are. Australia Thereâs a slight delay for Australian viewers, with Revolution of the Daleks arriving on January 2. This episode will be streamed live on ABC iview, but will be added to the serviceâs on-demand library shortly afterward, so donât worry if you miss it. ABC iview is free to use, and you donât even have to create an account before streaming. The only downside is that it has a poor selection of previous episodes; essentially just whichever reruns were shown on TV recently. Stan $10 AUD per month, 30-day free trial has seasons 1â11, but unfortunately, the only way to watch season 12 online is to buy it on platforms like Google Play and iTunes. ABC iview and Stan are region-locked, meaning youâll need a VPN to access them from outside of Australia. What can fans expect from the 2020 Doctor Who holiday special? As ever, the BBC has released a trailer that gives us a pretty good idea of what to expect from this yearâs Doctor Who special. The biggest announcement is, of course, the return of Captain Jack Harkness John Barrowman, who now boasts godlike abilities. These will be exceptionally helpful, especially considering the trailer shows Daleks causing chaos down on Earth while the Doctor Jodie Whittaker languishes in an intergalactic prison. Will Yaz, Graham, and Ryan be up to the task of stopping the Doctorâs oldest enemy? Youâll have to tune in to find out. Thisspecial is the first of Jodie's final three adventures throughout space and time before a brand new actor becomes the 14th Doctor in 2022. I believe he said something British-y like, âItâs when everyoneâs watching BBC all day on the telly.â And it stuck with me for Eve of the Daleks and not just for when Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker has a particularly terrible âDoctor Who inspires the humansâ monologue. The terrible isnât as much Whittakerâs fault as writer Chris Chibnallâs. Itâs like an elevator pitch for a show no one would ever think theyâd watch. The Eve is New Yearâs Eve. 2021âs New Yearâs Eve in Manchester, to be exact. Itâs Manchester so still new companion John Bishopâheâs in his fourth year as companion, story-wise, but only seventh episodeâcan talk some crap about Manchester. For BBC New Yearâs bingers, I guess. Itâs also more appropriate a story for Groundhog Day, as itâs about our heroes repeating the same few minutes over and over again. The Daleks are gunning for Whittaker and theyâve tracked her to a self-storage warehouse. But every time they kill the humansâthere are five total, Whittaker, her two companions, and then two likable guest starsâtime resets and the humans try to survive. Aisling Bea and Adjani Salmon are the guest stars. Sheâs the irate, disgruntled self storage warehouse owner she doesnât like working New Yearâs Eve and Salmonâs a customer. And heâs got a crush on her but sheâs too busy being snarky to notice. Salmon and Bea will have their lethal romantic comedy arc through the special and itâs moderately successful. It can get away with going through intense experiences together to bandaid some of the problems. But mostly once Bea finds out about the crush, Salmon stops being a character. Even if he turns out to be a thin one. It happens towards the end so itâs not a problem for long. The time loops where the humans try to survive get shorter throughout countdown to midnight, natch, so thereâs a nice rising tension. Chibnall and director Annetta Laufer do a fine job with the procedural, problem-solving aspect of Eve. Though it very much does not stand up to the rest of, well, time. When thereâs real-time action, the characters eventually are just taking up lots more than the story pretends they are so as to keep the counting down to midnight gimmick. Where the special simultaneously stalls out and goes into the ditch is with a big reveal involving Mandip Gill. Bishopâs other point in the episode is to force conversations with his costars to gin up character development. Itâll be Gillâs first character development in ages. But itâs also going to involve Whittaker, whoâs gotten no character development her whole time as Doctor backstory reveals donât count. Except itâs Whittakerâs second-to-second-last appearance as the Doctor. Even if they take the time to do the arc, itâs going to be rushed. And, ultimately, pointless, which seems likely to be the epitaph on Whittakerâs tenure. Sure, sheâs the first female Doctor, but she exists in the BBCâs reality where Ronaâs not just real, racism and sexism in modern day England are over too, and portraying it historically is rosy-colored as well. Toothless might be the better description. But, you know, general disappointments aside, a fairly good holiday special. .
